After years of frustration examining what could be the most effective way to expand their ATM networks, several Oklahoma credit unions realized that they would need to offer more locations to compete with other financial institutions in the area. This was often cost prohibitive because larger institutions could not justify installing a machine in an area without a large member base while smaller institutions were overwhelmed by the expense of installing a machine.
In 2003, on a handshake and with their word as their bond, five Oklahoma credit unions joined to make 45 ATM machines available to their members with no-surcharge. Soon other credit unions were invited to join. Thanks to the growing list of new members and an established relationship with Transfund Financial Services, the ATM Zone has grown to over 18 participating institutions that provide more than 1000 ATM machines in Oklahoma and 13 other states.
